June 28, 2014 will be the first the official Green Division Projects, “Six Parks Bike Ride.” We invite you to join us. Bring some water/drinks of choice, snacks or whatever else you need to go for an all day bike ride and come hang out in six different parks around Philly.
The details and logistics of this ride are a little different than a group ride. Please read all of the following information so you get an idea as to how this ride is structured. It is much like the 5 Points ride we did recently. So, the idea of the Six Parks Ride is foremost to create a reason to ride bikes around Philly, to various public parks, at a pace that each person or small groups of people will enjoy. This ride is intended to incorporate every sort bike rider on any type of bike to ride in whatever way anyone wants to. The plan is set up so that fast or slow riders can ride at their own pace without having to wait for anyone who enjoys riding slower. Or so that people who like to take their time will not feel pressured to speed up to people who like to ride faster. This is not a group ride where everyone rides together. It is just a reason to ride to 6 different parks in Philadelphia and hang out with other like-minded people once you get there.
The ride is set up on a schedule with time frames suggesting roughly when to try to arrive and leave each park. There is a generous amount of ride time between each park so that everyone can ride at different speeds. Also, people who cannot make it to the start of the ride at the first, second or third park will have an idea about what park people would be arriving to at say 2:00 pm. Or, if someone only can only ride to the first three of the six parks they can do that and leave early. Someone could merely ride from one to another if they so choose. Based on the structure of the Six Parks Ride people can ride at many paces and come and go as they choose because of the predetermined time frames and schedule. With that stated, this ride will meet at 12:30 pm at the Grey’s Ferry Crescent. This park is located along the Schuylkill River Banks between University Avenue and Greys Ferry Avenue. It is accessible from University Avenue, Greys Ferry Avenue or the West end of Wharton Street. We will meet near the bottom of the ramp leading down from University Avenue.
The ride will begin at 1:00 pm. Once we start each person or sub-groups can ride along any route at a pace that will get them to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park by 2:00 pm. FDR is located along the south side of Pattison Avenue between 26th and Broad Streets. Greys Ferry Crescent is roughly 5 miles from FDR depending on the route you decide to take. We will meet at the Gazebo on the edge of the pond in FDR for a half hour.
At 2:30 pm we will ride to the Delaware Waterfront Park located at the south end of Washington Avenue. You also have an hour to complete this distance. The Delaware Waterfront Park is about 5 miles from FDR and you can reach the park area by following a bike path leading towards the river at the southeast corner of Washington and Delaware Avenue. We will gather at a small table near the path that will become visible as you get closer to the river.
We will spend a half hour beyond the ride time at the Delaware Waterfront Park and leave at 4:00 pm to ride to Liberty Lands Park. The distance between these two parks is about 3 miles so you have 30 minutes to get to Liberty Lands where we will meet at 4:30. Liberty Lands is located on the East side of 3rd Street between Poplar and Wildey Streets. We will try to gather in the shady section of the park along 3rd Street where there are some benches.
We will leave Liberty Lands Park at 5:30 pm and ride to the Strawberry Mansion Bridge in Fairmount Park. The distance between these locations is 6 miles and you will have an hour to get to the bridge in Fairmount Park where we will meet at 6:00 pm. The bridge can be a little tricky to get to. A nice scenic way is through Fairmount Park by taking Reservoir Drive from 33rd Street on the east side of the Schuylkill River. Turn right on Dauphin Drive, left on Greenland Drive and that will take you directly to Strawberry Mansion Bridge Drive. At the bottom of a short hill you will see the bridge on your right. There is a walkway on the side of the bridge where we will try to meet.
At 6:30 pm we will ride to the final location, Clark Park where we will meet at 7:30 pm. Clark Park is about 5 miles from the bridge in Fairmount Park and located on Chester Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets. There is a rectangular paved area surrounded by short brick ledges near the south east corner of 46th and Chester Avenue. That is where we plan to meet. Since this is the final destination feel free to decide how long you want to stay at Clark Park before heading off towards home or wherever you decide to go at the end of the ride.
Please keep in mind that you are responsible for your own safety, bicycle maintenance along the way as well as finding your own route from each location to the next. Please bring tools, an extra tube, air pump or whatever you think you will need. This does not mean people will not offer help and hopefully there will be other people who ride at a similar route or pace that you do. But, there is not an official route or pace to this group keeping everyone together in a pack. It would be beneficial to bring a smart phone with a map application in case you get lost along the way. Helmets, safety, your style of riding and bike of choice are entirely up to you. However, we do recommend you wear a helmet and keep your personal safety as well as the safety of others in mind. Completing the ride to all 6 parks will take 6 hours so be sure to bring food and beverages or stop for some along the way. You may ride fast with your friends from one park to the next or you can ride leisurely taking as much time as you like. Yet, the faster you ride the longer you will be waiting for other people to show up or if you take too long you will miss the time frame to hang out with the group in a given park.
Lastly, we hope to see you on the ride!
